Special Workshop, organised by Dr. Bart Labuschagne LL.M. (Leiden University), during the XXIII World Congress of Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy.
Religion is increasingly a social and political factor in societies nowadays, and the question of the public role of religion is brought up more and more. Should religion be only a private matter, or should the public dimension of religion be clearly visible and positively acknowledged? Do we have to interpret the freedom of religion and the separation of church and state in a strict and narrow sense, or do we have to allow for a more benevolent relation between religion and the state?
In this workshop, legal and social philosophers, but also philosophers with an interest in religion and theologians with an interest in law and politics, are cordially invited to discuss the religious dimension of law and politics, and the political and legal dimensions of religion. Can we trace back in the rich spiritual and philosophical traditions of the world valuable concepts for rendering a proper place of religion in modern, post-secular societies? Is it possible to discuss rationally and philosophically the merits and demerits of a strict separation of church and state, and those of coöperation between religion and state? Philosophical and theological perspectives on this problem will be discussed in critical comparision with each other.
Participants are invited to deliver their paper in advance, no later than June 1st, if their proposal / abstract of their contribution is accepted by the organiser of the Special Workshop. The deadline for these proposals or abstracts is: April 1st.
All proposals / abstracts should be sent to the organiser of the Special Workshop, Dr. Bart Labuschagne LL.M., no later than: April 1st., by e-mail to Bart.Labuschagne@Law.LeidenUniv.nl
