We welcome papers from different philosophical traditions and perspectives that shed light on the relationship between philosophy and its history. Authors might address questions such as the following:
- In what sense do historians of philosophy contribute to the practice of philosophy?
- Are historians of philosophy themselves doing philosophy?
- Are philosophers who appeal to examples from the history of philosophy to support their ideas doing history?
- Is there a distinction between ‘analytic’ and ‘continental’ history of philosophy?
- Does genuine understanding of past philosophies require that we familiarize ourselves with the historical context in which they emerged?
- Will attending to the biographical details of a philosopher inform or simply distort our interpretation of his or her ideas?
- Can turning our gaze to the past practice of philosophy fruitfully inform our approach to contemporary philosophical issues?
- Should training in the history of philosophy be compulsory for philosophy students?
Submitted papers should be no longer than 3,000 words, include an abstract of no more than 250 words, and be prepared for blind review. Send papers in .doc or .rtf format to Tara Kennedy (kennedyt@unm.edu). In the body of your email please include your name, paper title, and institution, and indicate whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student. The program for the conference will be announced no later than 30 September.
Each author selected for the program will be allotted 30 minutes (20 minutes speaking time and 10 minutes for discussion). All accepted papers will be considered for inclusion in the conference proceedings.
