Today, scientists and philosophers are more than ever expected to cross their disciplinary borders in conducting their research activities. This is particularly the case in the social sciences which increasingly make use of a variety of new empirical findings and methodological tools in order to deal with classical issues. Thus, debates on interdisciplinary research projects which span the social and natural sciences call for both philosophical scrutiny and also for analysis from the point of view of social studies of science. This situation not only raises epistemological questions regarding interdisciplinarity but also requires some methodological sophistication in making use of the know-how of other disciplines.
The Exeter methodology workshop aims to provide beginning and advanced graduate students with the opportunity to discuss methodological issues with leading philosophers and sociologists of science. A limited number of contributions by graduate (both Master and PhD) students will be accepted for discussion. Students will have the opportunity to give short presentations (15-20 minutes) and to see their research debated by some of the most recognized scholars in the field. There will be no charge for this event, and some travel bursaries will be available for graduate students. These will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
